It wasn’t a thing of beauty, but it was a win.

Anderson County High School secured a region win, handing Chattanooga Howard a 28-14 loss on Homecoming Night for ACHS.

“It was an odd game to play in,” Anderson County Head Football Coach Davey Gillum said of the victory.

“We didn’t have the intensity we should have,” he noted. “There were a lot of distractions this week. We had the media here early in the week … Plus it’s homecoming week.”

The Mavs were businesslike in their opening drive, but penalties and “water break” timeouts — called by game officials — made the rest of the evening go as smooth as a newbie learning how to drive a stick shift.

Anderson County used 15 plays to put the ball in the end zone, a six-yard pass from Stanton Martin to Ryan Moog at the 8:35 mark to seal the deal.

Steve Wagner’s kick was good and the Mavs enjoyed a 7-0 lead.

It seemed inprobable that would be the only scoring in the first half.

Anderson County’s defense kept the Hustlin’ Tigers at bay, but a muffed punt and pass interference call late in the first quarter gave the visitors hope in the form of a 32-yard field goal attempt — no good.

The second quarter was a who’s who (or what’s what) in penalties, featuring a false start, an illegal procedure, an encroachment, two facemasks and what could have been a game changing chop block call on Howard.

That call came after a Hustlin’ Tiger interception return for 60-plus yards to set up shop inside the 20. That was not to be. After that call the visitors took a knee to end the half.

“I don’t know haw many penalties were called. A lot,” Gillum said.

Seventeen penalties were logged in the game — 10 for 94 yards against the Mavs, and seven for 44 yards for Howard.

He also noted the lack of fire was due to some missing elements.

“Trey Noe didn’t play tonight,” Gillum said. “He’s the spark on the O-line. He sets the tone and I think we missed that.”
