Anderson County High School’s cross country teams opened their 2023 season Saturday at the Fall Classic invitational meet at Victor Ashe Park in Knoxville.

One Lady Maverick athlete posted a Top 5 finish on the 5K course: Ava Moody came in fifth as she crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 24.05 seconds.

She was one of four ACHS girls to compete in the season opener.

Emily Boring finished 87th as she posted a time of 24:22.83, while Morgan Lindsay completed the race in 26:56.30, finishing 141s. Anna Gross came in 189th with a time of 34:47.74.

The Anderson County boys had 12 student-athletes compete Saturday.

Ben Clotfelder posted the Mavericks’ top time as he crossed the finish line in 30th place, posting a time of 17:39.55. Cameron Hardy was 41st (18:01.76), followed by John Cutler (47th, 18:15.72); Vance Laster (48th, 19:40.95); Ethan Bolton (107th, 19:46.19); Toby Day (112th, 19:40.95) and Darren Anderson (20:08.52).

Other Mavericks in the field included: Franklin Downs (20:20.53); Ryan Basford (20:48.76); Michael Mattson (20:56.85); Caleb Dill (26:04.12) and Tanner Warman (26:36.49).

ACHS Coach Derek Wallace said his teams both did well in their season openers.

“I was really pleased with our group today,” he said. “I only had four girls in the race. Ava finished fifth, and we have a lot of runners on the shelf right now.

“For our boys, we had some guys that didn’t have their best day, but they still did pretty well,” Wallace said.

Anderson County will host a meet at Norris Lake. The 33-team event will feature Oak Ridge and Clinon.
