Anderson County soccer picks up big win over old region rival on the road

The Anderson County High School girls soccer team notched a key early-season road victory Thursday night.

The Lady Mavericks (5-2-1) made the trip to Crossville and blanked one-time region rival Cumberland County 4-0.

ACHS Coach Chris Cutin said his team overcame a slow start against the Lady Jets.

“We went down there and we didn’t have our best game in the first half,” he said.

“But I felt like we played better in the second half.”

Despite a lackluster effort in the first half, the Lady Mavericks held a 1-0 lead at halftime as Emma Leander had the only goalm in the first half.

Anderson County took control of the match as it tallied three markers after halftime.

After the break, Lily Trent, Zoey Rose and Bralee Hall all buried the ball into the back of the Cumberland County net.

The Lady Mavericks got off to an 0-1-1 start with a 1-1 draw against Christian Academy of Knoxville and 4-2 loss to Powell before winning their division of the Smoky Mountain Cup and defeating Oneida, heading into last week.

They dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Webb School of Knoxville on Monday, Aug. 28, at home.

Even in defeat, Curtin said he was happy with his squad’s effort against the Lady Spartans, one of the top teams in the Knoxville area.

“I was pretty pleased with the way we played in the Webb match,” he said.

“I felt like we played pretty well.”

ACHS faced another tough home match against Knoxville Central Tuesday night, Results were not available at press time, but the Lady Bobcats entered the match with a perfect 7-0 record.

Central won its division of the Smoky Mountain Cup, and defeated Powell 3-2 last week.
