Anderson County is headed back to Murfreesboro and the Class AA state volleyball tournament.

The Lady Mavericks earned their trip to the Midstate with a four-set victory over Greeneville in a state sectional match at ACHS Thursday night.

After dropping the first set to the Lady Devils, Anderson County stormed back to capture a 23-25, 25-12, 25-18 25-20 victory, securing its spot in Murfreesboro this week.

The victory also avenged last season’s sectional loss to Greeneville, in Clinton, where the Lady Mavs were eliminated in four sets after winning the first game.

Revenge was sweet for ACHS, which enters the state tournament with a 30-11 record.

The Lady Mavericks went 10-0 in district play, then swept the district tournament with wins over South-Doyle and Alcoa before winning the Region 2-AAA tournament title with wins over Pigeon Forge (in four sets) and Seymour in Alcoa.

“It feels really good, especially after the loss we took to the same team last year,” Anderson County Coach Jayme Smith said. “It definitely feels like a little bit of redemption on our part.”

The Lady Mavericks, who have six seniors on their roster, have now reached the grand stage in the Volunteer State for the fourth time in six years.

ACHS opened state tournament play Tuesday against Dyer County at Blackman High School, but results were not available at press time. Play will continue through Friday, with the championship match at MTSU’s Murphy Center, and will be conducted in a double-elimination format.
