Anderson County High School’s wrestling team competed well in one of the toughest tournaments in the Southeast on Saturday.

But the Mavericks didn’t have a full roster due to illness and injuries.

Those who made the trip to Wise, Virginia, accomplished some big things on the mats.

Anderson County had five medalists, including one champion, at the Bates Classic, which was held at the University of Virginia, Wise.

“We wrestled really well, but it’s just kind of frustrating not having your whole team over there,” ACHS Coach Matt Slone said. “The guys who were there did well.

“But the flu has been the worst for us than’s it’s ever been. And then, we have a couple of injuries on top of that.

“They had some pretty good teams over there. Wise Central, who hosts the thing, is pretty good. They had a lot of guys in the finals.”

One of Kentucky’s top teams was at the tournament, but Anderson County’s Ayden Derry won the 190-pound bracket.

The Mavs had two athletes finish third in their respective weight classes as Josh Bingham (165 pounds) and Kyle Buckner, who grapples in the 175-pound division, each came in third.

Morgan Dye (215 pounds) took fifth in his weight class, while Tripp Haire finished sixth in the 113-pound division.

ACHS hosted Powell and Scott Tuesday night, but results were not available at press time.

The Mavericks travel to Soddy-Daisy Thursday night before taking an extended holiday break.
