Anderson County High School boys basketball Coach Jordan Jeffers was rather pleased with the way his team closed out the 2023 portion of its schedule last week.

However, his team still has some work to do if it is to reach its goals.

The Mavericks (9-5) came up just short of claiming the championship of the Hammer’s Christmas Classic Thursday night at ACHS as the Mavericks dropped the title game to William Blount, 69-63.

“We played well all three days and we played well enough to win against William Blount, but they’re really good and they had two guys that are really good,” Jeffers said. “The competition was a little different (against William Blount) and those are the games that you want to win.

“You don’t just want to be competitive in them,” he said. “You want to win them. We do really well against the teams that are OK, but you want to beat the teams that are really good.”

Cam Lawson scored 16 points against the Governors, and Brandon Dake added 14.

Anderson County advanced to the tournament championship game with an 80-49 victory over Oliver Springs in the tournament semifinals Wednesday, Dec. 20.

Dake scored 21 points against the Bobcats. Hayden Craig chipped in with 11 points for ACHS.

The Mavericks opened tournament play with an 82-41 victory over Midway on Tuesday, Dec. 19. Brian Hall scored 14 points and Dake had 12 for ACHS in its tournament opener.

The Mavs will have an extended holiday break before they return to the floor Jan. 2 when they host Carter.

Anderson County hosts Oliver Springs on Jan. 4, before entertaining Campbell County on Jan. 5.

Those will be the first of 13 January games for the Mavericks.
