Mavs, Lady Mavs start new year with busy week

Anderson County High School’s boys and girls basketball teams had a week off to close out the 2023 calendar year.

The Lady Mavericks last played on Dec. 21 when they defeated Hardin Valley Academy 54-51 to win the Hammers Christmas Classic at ACHS.

Anderson County enters the new year on a three-game winning streak after the extended holiday break.

“I told the girls that they better enjoy the days off while they had them,” Lady Mavericks Coach Mitch Cupples said.

In the tournament, Anderson County also defeated Carter (56-41) and Oneida (50-32).

The Lady Mavs returned to the hardwood on Jan. 2 as they hosted a rematch against the Lady Hornets. Results were not available at press time.

ACHS travels to Oliver Springs Thursday and hosts Campbell County Friday.

Anderson County lost to the Lady Cougars earlier this season in Jacksboro. Tipoff for both games is slated for 6 p.m.

The Mavericks began a busy January schedule on Tuesday when they hosted Carter on Tuesday. Results were unavailable at press time.

Anderson County (8-6) lost the last time out, falling to William Blount 69-63 in the championship game of the Hammers Christmas Classic.

The Mavericks defeated Midway (82-41) and Oliver Springs (80-49) in the holiday tournament.

Anderson County will travel to Oliver Springs Thursday for a rematch against the Bobcats before hosting Campbell County on Friday. The Mavericks defeated the Cougars earlier this season.

“We got a break and some days off when we really needed them,” ACHS coach Jordan Jeffers said. “We have 13 games in January.”
