Weather makes waves for KISL Meet

Coker to represent ACHS swim team at KISL

Last week’s inclement weather played havoc with the area high school and middle school swim team schedules.

The Knoxville Interscholastic Swim League’s city championships were supposed to be held over the weekend at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Aquatic Center, but last week’s winter storm forced the city swimming and diving championships to be postponed to Jan. 26-28 at the University of Tennessee.

The date change will keep Anderson County High School athletes and a middle school swimmer who represents Anderson County from competing on the city’s grand stage, because of prior commitments.

The swimmers who’ll miss the KISL meet are siblings. Middle schooler Shea Rainey has completed his 2023-24 winter season.

His brother Landon, (a junior at ACHS) and his sister, Donovan, will miss this weekend’s meet.

Landon and Donovan (a freshman for the Lady Mavericks), will look to return for the state championships, which will be held in Nashville next month.

“Technically, I had four swimmers qualify for the city championships, but because of the date change, I’ll only have one competing, and that’s my son,” Anderson County Coach Stephanie Coker said.

Coker’s son, Avery, will be in action this weekend. A junior, he will compete in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, He and his ACHS teammates are in the midst of their scholastic season.

“The season has been successful and it has gone really well,” Coach Coker said.

“Before the Christmas Break, we were in the Ray Bussard Invitational at UT, and we had success there.”
