Clinton High School’s basketball team closed out the regular season late last week with a pair of back-to-back lopsided losses.

But the Dragons won the game they had to win when they defeated crosstown rival Anderson County on Tuesday, Feb. 6, at the Don W. Lockard Gymnasium.

Clinton’s 61-48 victory over

the Mavericks netted it second place in the District 4-AAA standings.

That clinched a first-round bye in the district tournament, which will be held this week at Scott High School in Huntsville.

The Dragons have also qualified for the upcoming Region 2-AAA tournament.

The Mavericks (19-9) are the regular-season champions. They also have an opening-round bye in the district tournament and a spot in the region tournament.

Clinton (10-14) had three players post double figures in the scoring column against Anderson County. Jeremiah Lee had 14 points, while Teegan Bolinger scored 12 and Bryson Maddox finished with 10.

On Friday, the Dragons dropped a 67-44 decision at Meigs County.

Clinton Coach Chris Lockard said the Dragons had a rough night.

“They played really well and we didn’t play well at all,” Lockard said.

Maddox led the Dragons with 11 points, and Lee added 10.

In the regular-season finale at Karns Saturday, both the Dragons and the Beavers started slowly, but Karns manufactured enough offense to open an 8-4 advantage by the end of the first quarter.

Chris Bozeman, a senior transfer from Knox Central, came off the bench and provided a spark for the Beavers. He scored 11 of his game high 25 points in the second stanza. He also had 12 points in the third frame and helped Karns open a 51-30 advantage by the end of the third quarter. The Beavers would go on to win 72-51.

Lockard said the Dragons struggled again at Karns.

“Karns is good and we didn’t play well,” he said. “I think we had a little bit of a hangover after (Meigs County). We did some things that we don’t normally do and I did that to get ready for the tournament.

“I played a zone and we’re not really a zone team, and Karns exposed that.”

Jacob Dooley scored 13 points for the Dragons and was the only Dragon in double figures.
