Mother Nature continued to play havoc with the Clinton High School softball team last week.

Due to inclement weather, including rain, the Lady Dragons played just one game. They did, however, make the most of their lone opportunity to compete on the diamond as they routed Coalfield 10-0 on Monday, April 8.

Pitcher Bree McKamey posted a dominant performance in the pitcher’s circle as she hurled a one-hit shutout against the Lady Jackets.

McKamey, a senior, pitched a complete game, going five innings and striking out 11 Coalfield hitters.

She also had a big night at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, leading an offensive attack that produced 11 hits.

Taylor Sherwood also chipped in as she went 2-for-2. She doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored two more.

The Lady Dragons put this one away early by scoring five runs in the first inning and four more in the second, then securing a run-rule victory by plating one more in the sixth.

Heaven Britt-Kimbriel had two hits, including a double, in a pair of official at-bats.

Sara Bishop came up with two hits, one run and three RBIs.

Elizabeth Graham was 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBIs, a sacrifice fly and a run scored.

Lynnlee Adkins doubled, scored and knocked in a run.

Clinton Coach Leonard Sams said that things are looking up for his team, which entered the week with a 6-10 record after battling injuries, inclement weather and other adversities so far in the 2024 campaign, and playing one of the area’s most-demanding schedules.

“The biggest thing for us right now is getting everybody healthy,” Sams said. “Our bats are starting to come around.

“We’ve started the seasons with one of the toughest, if not the toughest schedule around.”

The Lady Dragons embarked on a busy week this week as they had games on Monday and Tuesday.

Clinton hosts Anderson County and will have its senior night tonight at 5:30. The Lady Dragons will head across town to play the Lady Mavericks Thursday, with first pitch slated for 5:30 p.m.
