WILLIAM ‘RICHARD’ VanVECKHOVEN’

William “Richard” VanVeckhoven, born May 6, 1943, passed away Nov. 1, 2018 at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Richard was a member of Second Baptist Church in Clinton. He was a proud Air Force Veteran who loved fishing, golfing, LSU college sports, and most of all his family.

Preceded in death by: Parents, Otto and Mittie VanVeckhoven; siblings, Ted and Darrnell VanVeckhoven.

He is survived by: Wife, Brenda Cook VanVeckhoven; children, Richard Gregg VanVeckhoven (Tammy), Russell Wayne VanVeckhoven (Dana), Angela Denise VanVeckhoven, Karen Ridenour, Kimberly Elledge (Don) and Bobby Ridenour Jr. (Sharon); grandchildren, Lane, Lora, Leah, Abigail, Ashlyn, Cody, Caitlyn, Meagan, Bobby III, Cassidy and Landon; great-grandchildren, Addison, Caleb, Alexis and Easton; Second Baptist Church family and Open Door Baptist family in Denham Springs, La.; a host of special friends and other family.

The family received friends from 5 – 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, in the Chapel of Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, Clinton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Thompson officiating.

Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Garden with full military honors presented by the Campbell County Honor Guard.

CAROLYN SUE WELLMAN

Carolyn Sue Wellman, 80, Lake City, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at her residence.

Carolyn was born Feb. 22, 1939, to the late Wilbur David Grubaugh and Mariah Eloise Lewis Grubaugh. Carolyn enjoyed shopping, coloring, her dogs, and getting her hair done. Carolyn loved spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors: Sons, David Wellman of Indiana, Bobby Wellman of Indiana; daughter, Kimberly Ford of Indiana; sisters, Debbie and Joe Fauver of Lake City, Barbara Murray of Deer Lodge, Pat Thompson of Portage, Ind.; nieces, Tonya Fauver of Lake City, Erica Phillips of Lake City, Tammy Justice of Lake City; nephew, Erik Fauver of Lake City; great-nieces, Kaylee Phillips, Lacey Phillips, Bailey Phillips, Elizabeth Justice, Hailey Justice; great-nephew, Austin Justice; grandchild, Crystal Rosembaum.

Visitation will be from noon - 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at Hatmaker Funeral Home in Lake City with the Rev. Tom Byrge officiating.

Interment to follow the funeral service at the Norris Memorial Gardens in Clinton.

JESSIE LEE PRIDE

Jessie Lee Pride, 74, Clinton, passed away peacefully and gracefully surrounded by love Friday, Nov. 2, 2018.

Jessie was one in a million. She never met anyone that she didn’t love and who didn’t love her instantly. As a homemaker, she loved taking pictures and doing crafts from painting to making animals and flowers out of bread dough or clay. Overall, spending time with her family and friends was her greatest joy in life.

Jessie was preceded in death by: Husband, who was the love of her life, Edward Glen Pride; parents, Fredrick and Josephine Bumgardner; brother, Paris Bumgardner; sisters, Juanita Duncan and Nina Bumgardner.

She is survived by: Brothers, Harry (Elizabeth) Bumgardner, and James (Karen) Bumgardner; and sisters, Arvilla Butler and Anna Ruth Byrge.

Jessie is also survived by: Special nieces and nephew, that she lovingly referred to as “her kids,” Arlene, Darlene, Patricia, and Johnny; and many other nieces and nephews.

Jessie will be greatly missed by her loved ones. To carry on her legacy, she would want everyone to show kindness and, most importantly, love to those around them just as she always did.

The family offers a special thanks to those that loved and took care of her at Williamsburg Villas Assisted Living (Sandy, Matt, Alisha, Kim, Marilyn, Donna, and many others).

A very special thank you to Jamye Ray who helped take care of her and showed her so much love. Thank you, Steve and Beverly Poe – the Best Senior Caregivers who were always there when she needed them. Also, thank you Smoky Mountain Hospice Team.

The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5, 2018, with a funeral service following at 8 p.m., at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the Rev. John McGaha officiating.

Music was performed by Sam Kitts and Tim Simek.

Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, and go in funeral procession to Norris Memorial Gardens for an 11 a.m. interment.

JERRY W. CROWLEY

Jerry W Crowley, 65, Powell, passed away Friday, Nov. 2, 2018, at his home.

He was born Dec. 10, 1952, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He retired partner of Crowley Brothers Guttering. He was the loving son of L.D. Crowley and Margaret Chambers Crowley. Jerry enjoyed fishing, hunting, and BIG ORANGE football. He treasured many good times with cousins, and many niece and nephews.

Jerry is leaving behind: Two sons, Kevin and wife Kelsi, and Joshua and wife Casey; grandchildren, Chole and Addilynn; estranged wife of the past four years, Velma Jean Sexton Crowley; two sisters, Shirley and Mary; and three brothers, Danny, Ricky, and Benny.

He had a very special love for his Aunt Pearl.

The family will receive friends from noon – 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2018, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home, with the funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. with Donnie Chambers and David Crowley officiating.

Graveside service will be at the Grandview Memorial Gardens following the funeral service.

The family asks that those attending wear their University of Tennessee Orange to the services.

PAUL SMITH

Paul Smith, 93, Clinton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at his home.

He was born Nov. 14, 1924, to the late William Dewey and Mary Mattie Smith in Pioneer. He graduated Lafollette High School as the President and Valedictorian of his class in 1943. He attended Lincoln Memorial University and was named Freshman with Highest Grade Point Average. He graduated Cincinnati College in 1950, Valedictorian of his class with a bachelor of science in pharmacy. After high school graduation, he volunteered for the US Army Air Force Cadet Corps. He served as a Bombardier in a B-29 as a 2nd Lieutenant until discharge in 1946. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton for many years and loved the XYZ/Primetime Group. He was a Life Member of the NRA, and a 60-year member of American Legion Post 0172.

He moved to Clinton after graduation and worked at Hoskins Drug Store as a pharmacist until he acquired Clinton Drug Company in 1955. He worked there as owner until he retired in 1991. After retirement he volunteered at Interfaith Clinic and First Baptist Christian Service Center. He loved hunting, fishing, hiking, gardening, traveling and was a 2nd degree black belt in Karate.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by: sisters, Florine Clotfelter and Dorothy Shelby.

He is survived by: Loving wife of 70 years, Elizabeth (Betty) Smith; wonderful children, Barbara Smith Roberts and husband Michael of Farragut, William H. Smith and wife Beth Wyckoff of Hendersonville, N.C.; sister-in-law, Shirley Haefele of Rochester, N.Y.; half-sister, Sharon Henegar of Lafollette; several nieces, nephews and a host of other family and friends.

He was a gentleman in many ways and never met a stranger to which he couldn’t talk.

The family is grateful for the help of his many caregivers, Mary, John, Bethany and many others. He enjoyed his friends, the Cloyds, Hammerlings, Bradens, Roettgers, and many others, as well as the cousins of his wife Betty.

The family received friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018, at Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton with the funeral following at 8 p.m. with the Rev. Terry Baker officiating.

Paul’s inurnment will be Sunday, Nov. 18, 2018, at Grandview Memorial Garden.

JO ANN SANDERS GARRETT

Jo Ann Sanders Garrett, Oak Ridge, succumbed to recurring cancer at home Oct. 30, 2018.

She died bravely at 80 years of age after a year-long bout conducted with grace and courage. Jo Ann was born Aug. 11, 1938, in Mt. Olive, Ala., daughter of the late Woodrow and Margaret Fields Sanders. She became a 50-year resident of Oak Ridge as a fully committed and engaged citizen on many fronts. As a community activist and volunteer, Jo Ann provided leadership as Girl Scout leader, Campfire Girls leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, and softball coach for Girls, Inc. She served terms on the Junior Playhouse board, Methodist Medical Center Foundation board, Oak Ridge Civic Music Association board, and Oak Ridge Unitarian Church board. She served on local and State League of Women Voters boards. She was president of the Oak Ridge Committee of 50, member and president of Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club (Rotarian of the Year 1999), member of Altrusa, Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, and Anderson County Chamber of Commerce. She was active in Democratic Party affairs as office holder and as campaign chairman for candidates of several local offices. She will be sorely missed by husband, family, friends and local organizations that have benefitted through her valuable involvement.

Jo Ann worked to put her husband through undergraduate school, attended the University of Alabama, and subsequently raised a family of three children. She was a loving wife and mother who poured her creativity into every aspect of parenting. Professionally, she was co-owner and manager of Ridgeway Gallery. She was the administrative assistant in Congresswoman Marilyn Lloyd ‘s office in Oak Ridge for two years, followed by 12 years as a public relations specialist, first with IT Corporation, then with Foster Wheeler Corp. She ran for State Representative of Tennessee’s 33rd district (lost by 300 votes). She was elected to the Oak Ridge Board of Education for two terms, second term as chairman. Lastly, in 2000 she became the Administrator of Elections for Anderson County from which she retired in 2007.

For recreation she enjoyed travel with her husband, family and friends (visited 39 countries). She enjoyed nature and the outdoors including fly fishing, hiking, biking and bird watching. Additionally, she was skilled at sewing, art crafting, crocheting, gardening, and dancing. Also, crossword puzzles and indoor and outdoor decorative plants were a passion.

She is survived by: Husband of 61 years, Ray Garrett; three children, Laurel George (husband Gary George); and granddaughter. Natalie George of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Lawrence Garrett (Karen Garrett) of Knoxville; and daughter, Susan Garrett (Mark Norwood) of Asheville, N.C.

Also, one brother, Donald Sanders (Nancy Sanders) and niece, Diane Sanders Smith.

Cremation will be conducted through the Neptune Society.

A memorial service will be held at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church in Oak Ridge at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018. Later, her divided ashes will be scattered in her favorite fishing cove on Watts Bar Lake and interred in the memorial garden at ORUUC.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, any donations on her behalf be made to the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

CLORENE PATTERSON DAUGHERTY

Clorene Patterson Daugherty, 89, Oliver Springs, formally of Devonia, passed away Oct. 28, 2018, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center due to stroke complications.

She was retired from TVA Natural Resources, Norris, and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church of Devonia. She loved watching Lady Vols basketball.

Preceded in death by: Two sons, Gary and Terry, whom she thought was two little angels; husband, Delbert; parents, Dorsey and Susie Patterson; sisters, Cleo and Charlene; sister-in-law, Dee Patterson, whom she thought of as a sister.

Survivors: Daughter, Cathy of Oliver Springs; sister, Bobbie Hibbs (Bill) of Jacksonville, Ark.; brother, Leland Patterson of Brooklyn, Ohio; three grandsons, Randy Daugherty (Stacy) of Heiskell, Mike of Oliver Springs, Brandon (Delisa) of Lafayette; two great-grandkids, Heather and Brett Daugherty; a host of other friends and relatives; and special friends, Opal and Frankie Hite and Glenith Bratcher.

The family would like to thank the staff at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, Neuro Critical Care Unit and 5 East, who provided the best care and comfort, everyone was so kind and passionate. It was greatly appreciated.

WILLIAM ‘BILL’ THOMAS ANTHONY

William “Bill” Thomas Anthony, 77, Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at his home.

Bill loved to watch football and was an avid University of Tennessee football fan.

Bill was preceded in death by: Parents, John and Marie Anthony; brother, Rick Anthony; sister, Connie Schafer; and sister-in-law, Mary Anthony.

Bill is survived by: Brothers, Johnny Anthony and wife Linda of Clinton, and Gary Anthony of Oak Ridge; sisters, Bonnie Harvey, whom was his caregiver for many years, Darlene Pierce and husband Jim of Milton, Fla., and Patricia Scruggs and husband, Doug of Oak Ridge; and sister-in-law, Diane Anthony.

Bill also leaves behind several nieces and nephews whom he was a beloved uncle to.
