Mavericks impeach Governors 56-16

A record-setting performance by wide receiver Dalton Wilson help pace the Anderson County Mavericks to a 56-16 win over visiting William Blount on Friday night.

Wilson hauled in five touchdown receptions from quarterback Stanton Martin, who provided an impressive seven-touchdown passes on 396 yards through the air.

The Mavericks opened scoring with a 13-play, 69-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Ryan Moog.

Clayton Utley added the extra point and Anderson County led 7-0 with 8:03 remaining in the first quarter.

The Mavericks’ Michael Carroll intercepted a pass on the ensuing drive and returned it to the William Blount 24-yard line.

On the first play of the possession Martin hit Wilson from 24 yards out for the touchdown.

Utley added the PAT and Anderson County led 14-0 with 5:56 left in the first quarter.

The Governors answered quickly on the next drive as they went 65 yards in just two plays. The big play of the drive was a 62-yard touchdown pass from Drew Blair to Nick Yoakum.

Ryan Ballard kicked the extra point to cut the Anderson County lead to 14-7 with 4:51 left in the opening quarter.

The Mavericks responded with a three-play, 56-yard drive highlighted by a another 24-yard touchdown pass from Martin to Wilson.

Utley kicked the PAT and Anderson County pushed their lead to 21-7 with 21 seconds remaining in the quarter.

William Blount scored early in the second quarter when Yoakum returned an interception for a touchdown.

The Ballard kick failed and the Maverick’s lead was cut to 21-13 with 11:26 remaining in the first half.

Both teams traded possessions and the Governors used an eight-play drive, which covered 54 yards to get into position for a 40-yard field goal by Ballard.

With 5:40 left in the first half, Anderson County led 21-16.

Once again each team traded possessions but the Mavericks got the ball on their own 45-yard line with 48 seconds remaining in the half.

Martin found Wilson for their third touchdown connection of the half - this time from 55 yards.

Utley added the PAT and Anderson County took a 28-16 lead into the half.

The Mavericks picked up where they left off in the first half as the Martin to Wilson combination capped a seven-play, 89-yard drive. The fourth scoring collaboration came from 55 yards.

Utley kicked the extra point and Anderson County held a 35-16 lead with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter.

Moments later the Mavericks got the ball back at the 50-yard line.

Three plays later Martin found a familiar target —Wilson — for the touchdown from 26 yards away.

Utley booted the PAT and the Anderson County lead swelled to 42-16 with 4:35 left in the quarter.

With less than three minutes remaining in the quarter, the Mavericks took over on their own 39-yard line. Two plays later Martin stunned the Governors with a 50-yard touchdown pass to Michael Carroll.

Utley added the extra point and Anderson County led 49-16 with 2:09 left in the quarter.

That wrapped up scoring until the 3:03 mark of the fourth quarter when Mason Phillips scored on a 14-yard run to cap a 10-play, 80-yard drive.

Just as they did a week earlier at Carter, the offensive line of Thomas Roberts, Trey Noe, Anthony Barbera, Brandon Elliott, Blake Chapman, and Russell Lindsay took over the game providing protection for Martin and opening gaping holes for the run game.

Steve Wagner came on to give Utley a rest and added the PAT to make the final 56-16 in favor of the now 2-0 Mavericks.

“Their [William Blount] two scores in the first half were the results of us still getting some kinks worked out. We didn’t feel like the game was ever really in doubt. We dominated them on both sides of the ball. We just made a couple of mistakes but we controlled the game,” said Davey Gillum, head coach of the Mavericks.

“Dalton [Wilson] had a big game but all of our receives did well. We completed every deep ball but one. The offensive line keeps improving. They are on their way to being a well-rounded line,” he said.

William Blount falls to 0-2 on the season.

Martin finished 22-32 for 396 yards and seven touchdowns. He also rushed for 62 yards on eight carries.

Wilson caught seven passes for 202 yards and five touchdowns.

Carroll had six receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown while Moog had four catches for 41 yards and a touchdown.

Phillips led the Mavericks with 91 yards rushing on 16 carries. Marquise Gallahar had 71 yards on eight carries.

Defensively, Moog and Phillips led Anderson County with five total tackles each. Phillips recorded a sack and forced fumble while Moog had two tackles for loss.

Gallahar had a fumble recovery while Austin Dunsmore forced a fumble.

Michael Carroll and Colby Cummings each had an interception.

The Mavericks open Region 2-4A Play on Friday when they host Chattanooga Hixon.

Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
