Martin semi-finalist for Mr. Football

Last Friday, Anderson County junior quarterback Stanton Martin was named a semi-finalist for Class 4-A Tennessee Titans Mr. Football.

Other semi-finalists include Cade Ballard (Greeneville), Kamron Hightower-Liggett (Marshall County), Michael Jamahl McGhee (Chattanooga Central), and Dontae Smith (Spring Hill).

“He’s smart, throws well, runs well, and that really opens up a lot of things. No disrespect to anyone but he’s the best in the state,” said Davey Gillum, head coach of the Mavericks.

The numbers provide more than a little support for Gillum’s claim.

For the season, Martin has thrown for 2,930 yards and 42 touchdowns. His completion percentage is 64.6 percent and he is averaging passing for 266 yards per game and has thrown touchdown passes to eight different receivers.

Martin has also rushed for 661 yards and seven touchdowns. He is averaging 60 yards per game and is currently second on the team in rushing.

Martin also has his team in the second round of the play-offs.

Three finalists will be announced on Monday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. on the Titans’ website at titansonline.com.

The three finalists for each award (a Mr. Football will be named for each of the nine classifications) will be invited to attend the awards luncheon at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, where the award winners will be announced.

Mike Keith, play-by-play announcer for the Titans, will emcee the awards ceremony.
