Lady Mavs top Lady Bulldogs

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks topped Claiborne 44-19 in the opening round of the Union County Thanksgiving Tournament last Monday.

Anderson County opened an 11-4 lead in the first quarter and extended their lead to 21-10 at halftime.

The Lady Mavs blew the game wide open in the third quarter when they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 13-4 to take a commanding 34-14 lead.

Anderson County pulled away down the stretch and won the game going away.

“We just pecked away at them each quarter and built the lead up. Our defense played pretty well too,” said Mike Ellis, head coach of the Lady Mavs.

Maci Houser led Anderson County with 12 points while Brooklyn McCoy scored 10 points.

On Tuesday, the Lady Mavs fell to host Union County by a score of 45-36.

Anderson County took a 15-6 lead in the first quarter as McCoy, Juliann Smith, Cameron Castleberry, and Hannah Freeman scored while Houser knocked down a pair of 3-pointers.

The offense cooled for the Lady Mavs in the second quarter as they only mustered six points — four of those came from free throws by Houser and Smith. Freeman scored the only field goal of the quarter for Anderson County but the Lady Mavs led 21-18 at the half.

The Lady Patriots picked up in the third quarter quarter where they ended the second quarter, outscoring Anderson County 12-6 and surged to a 30-27 lead.

The Lady Mavs again struggled to score in the final eight minutes as Union County held on for the win.

“We knocked down 15 in the first quarter and scored 15 in the second half. We had the shots they just wouldn’t fall but we have to come focused on being ready to play ball,” Ellis said.

With 13 points Houser again led Anderson County in scoring. She was the only Lady Mav in double figure scoring.

McCoy had nine points.

The Lady Mavs return to action on Friday when they host Knox Central. They will visit rival Clinton on Tuesday.
