Dragons beat Cougars

The Clinton Dragons fell to visiting Oak Ridge by a score of 63-49 last Tuesday night.

The Dragons kept the game close early as Trevon Hill, Evan Winchester, and Luke Harrison scored for Clinton as Oak Ridge led 11-10 at the end of the first quarter.

The Wildcats got separation in the second quarter as they ended the first half on a 12-2 run to lead 33-18 at halftime.

The Dragons rallied a bit in the third quarter as they cut into the Oak Ridge lead to make it a 45-32 game but that was as close as Clinton would get as the Wildcats held on in the fourth quarter and picked up the win.

“In the first half, we stopped rebounding. Early on we were controlling the boards and then they [Oak Ridge] started getting second chance points and that’s where you saw the separation and once they got separation it was really difficult to make stops and still produce on the other end,” said Chris Lockard, head coach of the Dragons.

“In the fourth quarter we made our run and got it [the Oak Ridge lead] down to 10. We had back-to back stops and had two balls on the rim that didn’t go down. The second one we missed they got the rebound and went down and scored. I think that deflated us,” he said.

Oak Ridge’s Levert Smith led all scorers with 24 points while Clinton’s Evan Winchester led his team with 17 points.

The Dragons got their first win of the season last Friday night at Campbell County.

After the Cougars took a 14-9 first quarter lead, the Dragons fought back in the second quarter thanks largely to the scoring of Jones and Hill.

Clinton led 22-19 at the half.

In the third quarter, they extended their lead to 36-31 and scored enough down the stretch to not only keep Campbell County at bay but also to extend their lead.

The Dragons will host Karns on Friday and visit Knox Central on Tuesday.
