Pro-life leaders speak out on United Way

Pro-life leaders today blasted United Way’s defense of its 62 chapters which sent $2.7 million dollars to Planned Parenthood in 2016.

In addition to claiming that dozens of chapters count as “only a small number,” United Way embraced Planned Parenthood’s defense of its practices by claiming dollars sent to the abortion giant include “counseling services” and “family planning.”

“First and foremost, Planned Parenthood is an abortion business,” said 2ndVote Executive Director Robert Kuykendall. “At an estimated $950 per abortion, United Way’s $2.7 million effectively paid for 2,901 out of Planned Parenthood’s 321,384 abortions in 2016. This shameful support for ending innocent lives is a clear violation of United Way’s mission statement, which says United Way ‘improves lives...to advance the common good.’ ”

United Way’s statement was provided to media after conservative corporate watchdog 2ndVote exclusively reported on the Planned Parenthood donations. 2ndVote has responded to United Way in a new video showcasing the effect of the 62 chapters’ millions in donations.

Priests for Life’s Alveda King, the niece of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., condemned United Way’s dissembling.

“On the surface, United Way appears to be a good source of charity,” said King. “However, Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion provider, receives donations from United Way.”

“You decide: don’t people need to know when their money is funding child-killing?”

Austin Waldo and Benjamin Kraft, co-founders of pro-life digital marketing firm Life Advancement Group, said that United Way should redirect its donations to be more in line with its mission statement.

“The $2.7 million that United Way gave to Planned Parenthood could have helped more than 160,000 abortion-vulnerable women find pregnancy resource centers online,” said Waldo and Kraft. “Instead of contributing to the destruction of 2,900 lives, United Way could have saved 320,000 children and mothers from abortion.”

2ndVote’s Pro-Life Guide to United Way has tracked United Way donations to Planned Parenthood since 2015. The latest update found 62 affiliates in 29 states donated to Planned Parenthood.

“United Way can’t sidestep its responsibility for enabling Planned Parenthood’s abortion business,” concluded Kuykendall. “It should cease all of its support for Planned Parenthood ASAP.”
