Thank you

EDITOR:

Dear Anderson County Commission Members,

Thank you for requesting a three-month extension on the DOE comment period for the proposed nuclear waste storage site---at the Commission Meeting tonight. Well done.

Both Admiral Hyman Rickover (creator of America’s Nuclear Navy) and Martin Luther King, Jr. firmly believed that having the courage to face reality was the first important step in solving tough problems. Officials in DOE headquarters, unfortunately, have had trouble facing the harsh truth that their important nuclear activities---while vital to the nation---can carry a substantial economic burden for local communities.

The proposed DOE waste storage area will create an economic burden for Anderson County residents, their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and so on forever. It’s time for the department to come to come to grips with this reality.

Thanks again for your leadership.

ps---There are several types of economic benefits that DOE could utilize to balance out the burden of the waste area. Interestingly, a number of these options would cost the federal government little or nothing. I would be happy to chat with you about them, if you like. Thanks again. MM
