Two people drowned in Norris Lake last week

Anderson County authorities recovered the body of a teenager from Norris Lake last Thursday morning after the youth was reported as a possible drowning victim Wednesday afternoon.

Because the victim was a juvenile his name has not been released.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Office Communications Director Tyler Mayes said in a release the victim’s friend’s family saw the teen “bobbing in the water asking for help” before they lost visual contact.

A search was conducted Wednesday night starting about 6:40. The body was found around 6 a.m. Thursday.

Multiple agencies took part in the search along with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, including Anderson County Rescue Squad, Campbell County Rescue, Knox County Dive Team, Clinton Police Department, TWRA, and the Andersonville VFD.

“Our prayers for peace and comfort are with the family,” Mayes said in the ACSO release.

The name of the youth who drowned has been posted on social media, it is the policy of The Courier News, however, to not publish those names unless they come from an official source.

Officials recovered the body of a 73-year-old Knoxville woman Friday who apparently fell off a boat and drowned in Norris Lake Thursday in Claiborne County.

Barbara Morgan’s body was located just outside the wave break at the Rock Harbor development in Claiborne County around noon, according to a news release from the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.

Officials believe Morgan fell overboard Thursday from a pontoon boat being operated by her husband, 75-year-old Paul Morgan.

Mr. Morgan jumped into the water and tried to rescue his wife, according to the release. When the boat drifted away, swam to a nearby island. Mr. Morgan was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center to be treated for hypothermia. “TWRA offers sincerest prayers and condolences for the victim’s family,” the release reads. “TWRA would also like to thank the Claiborne County Rescue Squad and Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance.”
