The Anderson County Mavericks rolled to a 45-0 win over visiting Scott last Friday night.

The Mavs finished the regular season 5-5 overall and 5-0 in Region 2 4A. They wrapped up their fifth-consecutive region championship two weeks ago with a win over Gibbs.

“The defense played well,” said Davey Gillum, head coach of the Mavericks. “They [Scott] struggled to move the ball. We didn’t get a whole lot of work in the secondary. The front seven took care of business.”

Anderson County started the scoring early when Cody Miller completed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Zach Shannon. Josh Velero kicked the extra point and the Mavs led 7-0 with 10:01 left in the first quarter.

They struck again late in the quarter when Gavin Noe capped a five-play, 80-yard drive with a 46-yard touchdown run. Velero booted the extra point and Anderson County led 14-0 with one second left in the first quarter.

The Mavs’ defense set the tone in the second quarter as Shannon dropped the punter in the end zone for a safety to give Anderson County a 16-0 lead with 10:24 left in the first half.

A couple of minutes later, the Anderson County defense recorded their second safety of the quarter when Nick Moog tackled a ball carrier in the end zone to give the Mavs an 18-0 lead with 7:28 left in the half.

An interesting side note, the last time Anderson County recorded two safeties in one quarter was 2017 against Carter when Ryan Moog accomplished the feat.

Anderson County added to their lead following the free kick when Nick Moog scored on a 46-yard run. Velero added the extra point to push the Mavs’ lead to 25-0 with 4:18 remaining in the half.

Anderson County ended the half with a 21-yard touchdown pass from Miller to Shannon once again. The extra point attempt failed but the Mavs carried a 31-0 lead into the half.

Anderson County opened the third quarter much like they ended the second as they marched 75 yards in eight plays. Anthony White scored on an eight-yard run and Zeke West kicked the extra point to make it a 38-0 lead for the Mavs with 5:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Minutes later, Kaleb Livingston ran the ball in from 14 yards out. Tyler Radcliff booted the PAT to extend the lead to 45-0 with 1:17 left in the quarter.

With the continuous clock working and the Mavs substituting freely, there was no scoring in the fourth quarter.

Noe led the Mavericks with 108 yards rushing and one touchdown on 11 carries. Moog added 56 yards and a touchdown on two carries.

Miller finished the game 10-17 for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Garrison Terry led Anderson County with five receptions for 73 yards while Shannon had three catches for 43 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Shannon led the team with eight total tackles. Moog had seven total tackles with a fumble recovery. Logan Crumpley had six total tackles and Sam Caylor had three tackles and a fumble recovery.

The Mavericks will host the Seymour Eagles (6-4, 2-3 in Region 1 4A) on Friday at 7 p.m. to open the playoffs.
