Lady Dragons move to 3-0 in district play

The Clinton Lady Dragons won two more games last week with home wins over region rival Gibbs and district opponent Scott.

On Tuesday, Clinton dominated Gibbs by a score of 68-25.

The Lady Dragons stormed out of the gate to a 21-5 lead as Sarah Burton tallied 10 of her game-high 44 points. Ashanti Davis added five points in the opening frame. Belle Starnes, and Bailey Burroughs also scored to help Clinton build the early lead. The Lady Eagles offense fared a little better in the second quarter, but the Lady Dragons outscored them by 10 points to lead 40-14 at the half.

It was more of the same in the second half as Clinton poured on the scoring and rolled to the win.

Burroughs added 14 points for the Lady Dragons.

On Friday, Clinton picked up a convincing 57-40 win over Scott to move into first place in the district standings.

The Lady Dragons more than doubled the scoring of the Lady Highlanders in the first quarter as they went up 15-7 as Burton, Burroughs, Starnes, and Sydney Herrell picked up baskets for Clinton. Ally York made her return for the Lady Dragons during the game and made her presence known with five points in the second quarter helping stake Clinton to a 27-18 halftime lead.

The Lady Dragons blew the game open in the third quarter as Burton, Starnes, and Herrell added 3-pointers as part of a 21-point onslaught to go ahead 48-28.

The Lady Highlanders had no answer for Clinton in the fourth quarter and the Lady Dragons added their third district win before Christmas.

Burton led all scorers with 22 points. Burroughs and Herrell each added 10 points for Clinton.

The Lady Dragons fell in the opening round of the Scott County Christmas Tournament on Monday, losing to Pickett County 73-52.

Clinton trailed by just two points after one quarter but Pickett County outscored the Lady Dragons 20-10 in the second quarter to take a 38-26 lead. The Lady Dragons were just off the pace in the third quarter but remained within striking distance, trailing 48-35. Pickett County put 25 points on the board in the fourth quarter and slipped away with the win.

Sarah Burton led Clinton with 28 points.
