Lady Mavs end 2021 on a high note

The Anderson County Lady Mavericks beat First Baptist Academy 48-38 last Wednesday in their final game of the 2021 Anderson County Christmas Tournament.

Using a balanced scoring attack and solid defense from Emily Mustard, Kylee Alvis, Lydia Meldrum, Jaylynn Bullock, and Shelby Kelly, the Lady Mavs took a 10-2 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Eagles responded with 10 points in the second quarter but Anderson County took a 22-12 lead into the half.

“We started off not making outside shots so we started pounding it inside. Shelby Kelly did a great job getting the ball to Emily Mustard. Emily also got a number of buckets running the floor in transition,” said Mitch Cupples, head coach of the Lady Mavs.

FBA trimmed the Lady Mavs’ lead to 32-26 in the third quarter but that was as close as they could get as Anderson County pushed the lead back to 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Mustard led all scorers with 18 points while Alvis added 10 points.

The Lady Mavs return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 4 when they host Hardin Valley Academy at 6 p.m.
