Ogans recognized as Conservation Farmers of the Year

For all their conservation efforts, hard work and enthusiasm, Ashley and Shane Ogan earned the recognition of Anderson County Soil Conservation District 2021 Conservation Farmers of the Year.
We first met Ashley and Shane Ogan when they were planning to purchase their property in Anderson County.

They shared with us their vision for the place, and when our visit ended, we were certain that one day we would work together. They stayed true to their vision for their family.

Fast forward one short year from purchasing the farm, and they had leased the adjacent property, and are now in full conservation implementation mode. The work completed on the property with the help of NRCS, TDA, and the Anderson County Soil Conservation District:

• 2,245 feet of permanent interior fencing

• 2,567 feet of access control fencing

• 1,900 feet of temporary fencing

• 1,608 feet of livestock pipeline

• 3 watering facilities

• 3 heavy use areas

• 27.6 acres of prescribed grazing

• 71.5 acres of access control to the woods

Yet it does not end there. Shane also had the idea of installing fence-line feeders.

He was ahead of NRCS; while we were not assisting farmers with that work, he knew from the beginning of our planning that this was a non-negotiable item for their farm. So, without any assistance, they installed two fence-line feeders.

Their property showcases the amazing conservation work and partnership the Anderson County Soil Conservation District, NRCS and TDA.

It has been a privilege and a joy to work with Ashley and Shane.

We are very proud of what they have accomplished. Seeing them involve their children on the operation makes us feel hopeful about the future, especially since farming is often considered a thing of the past.

Ashley, Shane, and their children are proving that farming can have a bright future.
