Liquor store opens, Starbucks to follow

One new business – SP’s Wine and Liquor – has opened in a new building just west of Buddy’s bar-b-q on North Charles G. Seivers Boulevard in Clinton, and a second business, a Starbucks coffee shop, will follow sometime in March.

They take up the two spaces in a new 5,474 square-foot building at 2170-2174 N. Charles Seivers Blvd., near Interstate 75, Exit 122, in a development called Glen Alpine II. Construction began last summer, and the package store just opened last Friday, the owners said.

Still under construction is the Starbucks, on the east end of the building, in a space of about 2,300 square feet.

A Starbucks corporate spokesperson said Friday that the company plans to open the new store “sometime in March.”

The city of Clinton last June 22 issued a building permit for a new $579,221 building at 2170-2174 N. Charles G. Seivers Blvd. to Sinking Springs LLC in the Glen Alpine II development. A $356,000 building permit for the interior construction of the Starbucks store was issued on Dec. 10.

No further details on the Starbucks store and its hours were immediately available.

Developer Andy Hillmer is listed as the principal on the permits. This development is just west of the building already completed that houses Buddy’s Bar-b-q, which opened in December 2020, along with a Farm Bureau insurance office and a Tennova Healthcare clinic.

Starbucks will be the east-side tenant of the new building, and it will also include a drive-through lane, the spokesperson said.

The Starbucks was originally scheduled to open last August. No reason has been given for the delay.

SP’s Wine & Liquor takes up the rest of the building – about 3,300 square feet.

Suresh Patel and son Alish Patel are the owners of SP’s Wine & Liquor, and Alish Patel’s brother, Bhavesh “Bobby” Patel, is one of the managers.

There was also a delay in getting the package store open.

The Patels said last March that they hoped that their portion of the building would be ready for them to open last Sept. 1. In November, they said that a delay in getting the heating and air conditioning system installed was responsible.

“Our plan is to feature great wine and liquor selections,” Alish Patel said. “We will also have a selection of exclusive barrel whiskeys that we will be getting from bourbon distillers in Kentucky, as well as from Jack Daniel’s.

“We also plan to have a selection of good Tennessee moonshine brands, along with our fine wines at a great retail price. We’re looking forward to serving the community with a fine selection of wine and spirits.”

The store will have a total of five employees, and is open seven days a week, Patel said. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, he said

Clinton voters approved a referendum question on Nov. 3, 2020, to allow package liquor sales inside the city limits.

The city’s first package store, MS Wine & Liquor, opened earlier this month in the Centre Plaza shopping center on North Seivers Boulevard.
