Lady Wildcat netters sweep N. Knox quads

Oak Ridge High School’s volleyball team entered this week locked in a first-place tie in the District 3-AAA standings.

The Lady Wildcats (6-4 overall, 4-0 in the district) began the week tied with Clinton (11-2, 4-0).

Oak Ridge hosted the Lady Dragons Tuesday, but results for the first match between the two rivals were unavailable at press time.

Last week, the Lady Wildcats recorded the North Knoxville sweep, toppling Halls Tuesday, Aug. 23, winning in three sets 25-18, 25-13, 25-12. Oak Ridge also downed Knoxville Central on Thursday in three sets.

Against the Lady Devils, Marissa Kenworthy had 16 digs and three aces. Lily Yassu had 13 kills and hit .550 against the Lady Bobcats. Kylan Barger hit .500 against Central. She finished the match with nine kills and no hitting errors.

Oak Ridge also has district victories over Powell and defending champion West High, defeating the Lady Rebels in four sets.

“I’m very happy with the way we’ve played in the district,” first-year head Coach Audrey Sherles said.

They Lady Wildcats were swept in a pair of non-league matches last week as they lost to Maryville, 25-17, 25-16, 25-14, on Monday, Aug. 22.

Knoxville Catholic, the defending Division II-AA state champions, swept Oak Ridge, 25-10, 25-16, 25-18.

Peyton Upgraft had 11 assists and two aces against the Lady Irish, while Lily Shelton had seven digs.

“We lost to Maryville and we lost to Catholic,” Sherles said. “We lost both those matches in three.

“We play better when we play up-tempo. But when we get down, we have a tendency to get in our heads and we don’t think we’re as good as we are or can be.”
