Lady ’Cats split a pair last week on the pitch

It was a tale of two matches last week for the Oak Ridge High School girls soccer team.

The Lady Wildcats (4-2 overall, 1-1 in District 3-AAA) concluded the week with a 3-2 loss at home to Boyd Buchanan Thursday night.

That loss was puzzling for Oak Ridge Coach Donnie Green.

“I’ve never been more frustrated,” he said. “We’re the better team, but they were the better team that night.

“They’re good and they beat us down there last year. But I feel like we were the better team.

“We got down and two of their goals came off corner kicks, and they didn’t come off headers. On both of them, the ball was on the ground and it sat there. We were just watching the ball and we couldn’t clear it. We didn’t have any communication and we had no urgency.”

After falling behind 2-0 against the Lady Buccaneers, the Lady Wildcats battled their way back into the match as Hayven Laurendine and Aniya Fisher scored. Fisher, who converted a free kick for her goal, was credited with an assist on Laurendine’s marker.

Oak Ridge opened play last week with a 9-0 district win at Campbell County.

Fisher had four goals and three assists against the Lady Cougars in Jacksboro in a match that was halted as the TSSAA mercy rule was invoked after Fisher tallied off an assist from Abbey Pressley.

The Lady Wildcats also received two markers from Brooklyn Henderson.

Laurendine, Maggie Jackson and Elena Vogt also tallied for Oak Ridge.

The Lady Wildcats returned to action Tuesday as they traveled to Lakeway Christian School. Results were not available at press time.

Oak Ridge is set to host Karns in a District 3-AAA match Thursday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

The Lady Wildcats will celebrate the 40th anniversary for their program, which began with a match against the Lady Beavers in 1982.
