Lakers work overtime to get ‘W’

Lake City Middle School’s football team had to work some overtime Thursday night.

It didn’t come easily but the Lakers notched their first win since August as they defeated Huntsville 48-42.

“We had to play a lot overtimes, I think it was six to be exact,” said Eric Tackett, Lake City’s first-year head coach. “The kids have been working hard and they got a win when they really needed one.

“I’m really proud of them for the way they fought. I’m happy for them.”

Caleb Phillips had a pair of touchdown receptions while Garrett Turner and Easton Owens each caught scoring passes from quarterback Maddox Tackett, who amassed over 400 passing yards for the Lakers, who close out the regular season Thursday when they host Sweetwater Thursday night at Lake City Ball Field.

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.

Against Huntsville, Joey Radford and Tyler Pitsenbarger had touchdown runs for Lake City.

Maddox Tackett also impacted game on defense as he had an interception, his third of the season.

“Maddox had an interception on defense,” Coach Tackett said. “That’s his third this season and he’s only played defense in the last three games.

Weston Nichols also had a big game on defense, making several tackles, including a key stop in overtime.

“Weston Nichols made a big stop in overtime and kept them from scoring and then we got the ball back, scored and one the ball game,” Coach Tackett said.
