Lady Mav soccer team is 5-AA tournament champion

Anderson County High School’s girls soccer team is the District 5-AA tournament champion.

The top-seeded Lady Mavericks clinched the title with a 5-2 victory at home on Tuesday, Oct. 11, at home over Kingston.

ACHS, which picked up its ninth victory in 2022, wasted little time kicking its offense into high gear against the third-seeded Lady Yellow Jackets as Emma Leander scored four goals and was credited with an assist in just 30 minutes on the pitch.

She completed her hat trick in approximately 20 minutes, and that enabled Lady Mavericks’ Coach Chris Curtin to rest his star before the Region 3-AA Tournament, which opened with Anderson County hosting Cumberland County Tuesday in an elimination semifinal match.

The Lady Yellow Jackets also competed in a region semifinal match against District 6-AA champion Livingston Academy. Results from the region semifinals were not available at press time.

But the two winners advanced to Thursday’s championship game and secured a spot in Saturday’s state sectional round.

The Lady Mavericks (9-7-1) defeated Cumberland County 3-1 in the season opener for both schools in August. The Lady Wildcats defeated Anderson County 3-2 in September.

Curtin thought his team might’ve had what it took to win the district championship, but was pleased to see ACHS clinch the title.

“This year, we wanted to win the district championship because we lost this game last year,” Curtin said. “It really is great to win the district. The girls did a great job doing everything we worked on.

“We did what we needed to do and we knew that Kingston was going to come in here hungry.”

Victoria Laster, another key player for the Lady Mavericks, scored a goal and dished out two assists in the championship match.”
