The 2022 high school cross country season ended with both Anderson County teams posting top marks at the Class A/AA State Championships at Sanders Ferry Park in Hendersonville.

The Lady Mavericks and the Mavericks both posted Top 10 finishes at the 5K race in the Midstate. The ACHS girls finished sixth on the grand stage, while the boys finished 10th despite some unseasonably warm weather late Thursday afternoon into the evening.

“The weather was kind of a surprise as it was a little hot, and that created some adversity,” ACHS Coach Derek Wallace said. “Our girls finished sixth this year and we finished eighth last year, so I’m really happy about that.

“Our boys finished 18th last year, and to shave eight spots off of that was great, and they were really excited about that.”

The ACHS boys finished 10th as a team in Hendersonville after coming in 18th in 2021.

For the Lady Mavericks, senior Kaitlyn Fisher finished eighth as she completed the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 8.19 seconds, achieving all-state honors. Freshman Ava Moody finished 16th, posting a time of 20:31.15. She narrowly missed being named to the all-state team as a freshman.

“I was a little sad for Ava Moody because she missed making all-state as a freshman,” Wallace said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a freshman make all-state. What she’s done is tremendous.”

Megan Haire, who has battled injury all season, finished the high school season by coming in 65th at the state meet (22:31.60). Marley Caldwell was 70th (22:39.59). Emily Boring came in 122nd as she finished the course in 24:06.38. Caroline Spurling (25:52.75) was 157th and Morgan Lindsay came in 170th with a mark of 26:29.90.

Vance Laster finished 37th (17:49.08). Conner Chandler came in 67th (18:19.30). Ben Clotfelter posted a 78th-place finish as he crossed the line in 18:31.60. Ryan Basford was 94th (18:49.49). Ethan Bolton was 138th (19:41.21). Jaxon Taylor was 157th as he finished in 20:01.95 and Toby Day finished 167th (20:09.64).
