Soccer Dragons pick up first win of the season against East Robertson

After opening the season with three consecutive losses against some stiff competition, Clinton High School’s boys soccer team closed out play in the Smoky Mountain Cup in Gatlinburg with a 9-0 victory over East Robertson Sunday afternoon.

The Dragons (1-3) scored early and often in their tournament finale against the Indians.

Owen Gray tallied five goals, including the first four of the match at the Rocky Top Sports Park.

Zyrus Drew scored a marker and dished out a pair of assists, while Oliver Guerra had a goal and an assist.

Oliver Drew and Christian Honeycutt each found the back of the net against the Indians, while Hayden Kelly, Julio DeValle and Christian Gutierrez each pitched in by contributing assists.

Clinton opened Smoky Mountain Cup play with a 5-2 loss against Springfield.

Gray and Gutierrez scored in that match.

The Dragons dropped a 2-1 decision to Providence Academy Saturday night, with Gray scoring the lone goal of the game for CHS.

Clinton opened the 2023 campaign with a 5-0 loss to Oneida after being ambushed by the Indians early.

“We got down 4-0 in the first half and we cleaned some things up and the second half was 1-0,” Clinton Coach Gene Chunn said. “You can see us getting better. You can see us improving.

“When you play in the Smoky Mountain Cup, you play against some good competition.”

Despite seeing his young squad take a few lumps out of the gate, Chunn, the Dragons’ second-year head coach, was encouraged after Sunday’s match against East Robertson.

“It was nice to get a win and a big win,” he said. “I got a chance and I played everybody and I had a JV player get a goal and I had another JV player get an assist, and that was really nice to see.”
