River City went 4-for-4 on the diamond last week

The summer baseball season continued last week with the River City River Boys winning all four of their games.

The River Boys (8-2-1) traveled to Knoxville Thursday and swept a doubleheader against the Knoxville Falcons at Larry Cox Field on the campus of Christenberry Elementary School. River City won the opener 10-0 before using a big fifth inning to claim an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.

In Game 1, River City picked up a clutch hit and solid pitching from Garrett Lee, one of the experienced players to make the trip to North Knoxville.

Lee allowed just one hit as he tossed a complete game, going five innings. He surrendered just one hit, a two-out single to Knoxville’s Maddox Myers.

Lee walked seven and struck out six, and River City Coach Rob Stacy said that his performance was a big confidence booster,

“It was great to see Garrett get out there on the mound and get some (playing time), to see him get reps,” Stacy said. “He needed that.

“This was big for all of our young guys. Some of our older plyers weren’t with us because they’re playing in some big (travel) tournaments.”

Lee also did some damage with his bat in the first game as he had a double against the Falcons.

J.P. Dobbins had two hits and an RBI, and scored a run. Matthew Denton went 2-for-2 with two runs and three RBIs, while Brent Schaffer went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for River City, which led 5-0 before tallying five times in the fifth inning.

In Game 2, the River Boys led 3-1 before scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth to blow things open.

Morgan Newman had a three-run triple, while Sam Duggins went 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and an RBI. He also recorded a stolen base.

He also started on the mound and earned the win. He yielded one run, five hits and one walk. He struck out eight in 4.2 innings pitched.

Landry Jennings came in and retired the final Knoxville hitter to end a long night of baseball.

River City also swept Coal Creek in a double header Tuesday, June 6, at Anderson County High School.
