‘Hire-A-Veteran Day’ is next week — July 25

National Hire-A-Veteran Day is July 25, the day that recognizes an ongoing initiative to connect our nation’s veterans with employers across the country.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Veterans Employment and Training Service helps to prepare America’s veterans, transitioning service members and military spouses into meaningful careers through its many programs and initiatives.

This year, we are excited to offer interviews with Department of Labor VETS professionals in your area who can talk about National Hire-A-Veteran Day and many of these life-changing programs that have helped countless veterans and employers to connect.

Potential interviews with local employers are also offered, if available.

Some of the programs available to discuss include:

• HIRE Vets Medallion Program.

Through the Honoring Investments in Recruiting and Employing American Military Veterans Act of 2017 (HIRE Vets Act), the secretary of labor established a program that recognizes employer efforts to recruit, employ, and retain veterans. The HIRE Vets Medallion Award is the only federal-level employment award that recognizes a company or organization’s commitment to veteran hiring, retention, and professional development. Employer-applicants meeting criteria established in the rule will receive a “HIRE Vets Medallion Award.”

In 2022, 16 employers in Tennessee were recognized for their commitment to hiring veterans and enhancing their professional development.

• Off-Base Transition Training.

This program is an opportunity for veterans currently serving in the National Guard and Reserve, and their spouses to take control of their careers through workshops to help meet their employment goals.

Free workshops combine the skills learned in service and as a spouse with Department of Labor-taught employment fundamentals.

Virtual courses can be taken from anywhere and are built to fit a veteran’s schedule.

Workshops include topics including résumé essentials, interview skill-building, creating LinkedIn profiles, and performing job searches, as well as how to market skills.

• Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program.

This is an employment-focused competitive grant program of the Department of Labor.

It is the only federal grant to focus exclusively on competitive employment for homeless veterans. On June 29, DOL-VETS awarded approximately 159 grants nationwide worth $58 million.

In Tennessee, one grant, worth $250,000, was awarded.
