James Worthington selected to receive Scottish Rite 33-degree

James Ronald Worthington, Rocky Top, has been selected by the Scottish Rite Supreme Council in Washington D.C. to receive the 33-degree. The 33-degree is the highest honor bestowed upon a Scottish Rite Mason for noble work in the community and Masonry.

Worthington is a member and past master of Coal Creek Lodge 492 in Rocky Top. He is a member of Royal Arch Mason 155, Rocky Top, where he served as “high priest.” He is also a member of Chevalier Commandery 21, Knight Templar and Adoniram Council 114 in Oak Ridge.

He is retired from the state of Tennessee Department of Corrections after working nearly 30 years.

His last position with the state was warden at Brushy Mountain State Prison, which was closed in June 2009.

Worthington is co-chairman of the Knoxville Scottish Rite shoe program that fits shoes for needy school age children twice a month at Knoxville Scottish Rite Temple in Knoxville.

He is currently serving as senior warden in the Knoxville Lodge of Perfection. He was recognized as Scottish Rite Mason of the Year in 2020.

He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and is a member of the American Legion Post 172 in Clinton.

Worthington and his wife, the former Regina Kay Lay, reside in Rocky and they have one son.

He was invested Knight Commander Court of Honour (KCCH) in 2017.

He will receive his 33-degree at the Grand Lodge Building in Nashville on Dec. 9.
