Lady Maverick soccer wins Smoky Mountain Cup with shut out of Ooltewah

Anderson County High School girls soccer Coach Chris Curtin couldn’t have scripted a better weekend for his team.

Curtin saw his Lady Mavericks win the Smoky Mountain Cup Sunday with a 5-0 victory over Ooltewah at the Rocky Top Sports Complex in Gatlinburg.

The win over the Lady Owls culminated a weekend that saw ACHS win three matches and shut out its three opponents by a combined score of 12-0 en route to claiming a tournament championship.

In the match against the Lady Owls, Anderson County’s final game of the tournament, the Lady Mavs got a hat trick from Emma Leander.

Roxana Aguilar also scored twice, and goalkeeper Emily Martin recorded a clean sheet.

ACHS (4-1-1), which opened this week in the midst of a four-game winning streak, began the elite event in Sevier County with a 6-0 win over Goodpasture Christian School.

Leander found the back of the Goodpasture net four times in the match. Zoey Rose and Megan Shock also scored for the Lady Mavericks.

In an evening tilt Saturday, Anderson County outlasted Marion County (Kentucky), notching a 1-0 victory behind a marker by Rose.

“It was a good weekend for us,” Curtin said. “We found some places where we could be successful and it was a good chance for us to grow because we were able to highlight some spots that we need to work on.

“When you play those kinds of teams, it helps you to get better, and gives you the confidence to compete in your region and your conference,” he said. “That’s why we scheduled teams like (Knoxville) Central, Oak Ridge, Powell, (Christian Academy of Knoxville) and Webb (School of Knoxville).”

The Lady Mavericks opened the season on Monday, Aug. 14, with a 1-1 draw against CAK. ACHS dropped a 4-2 decision to Powell on Tuesday, Aug. 15.

The Lady Mavs picked up their first win of the season on the road as they shut out Oneida 6-0.

Leander scored twice against the Lady Indians, while Aguilar, Rose, Millie Swisher and Makayla Pinkki each tallied one marker each.

ACHS travels to Cumberland County Thursday for a match a 6:30 p.m.
