As the 2023 high school cross-country season kicks into high gear, Clinton High School Coach Tim Kumes continues to be pleasantly surprised by his boys team’s results.

The Dragons had six athletes compete at the Cherokee Invitational, and four of the team’s runners set records Saturday.

“We had six guys in the race and four of those guys set [personal records], and it’s good to see all of the hard work paying off for them,” Kumes said. “If they continue to work hard and progress, then I think we’ll continue to see the times go down.”

Clinton’s top two finishers, however, did not set their top marks, but still completed the course inside of 21 minutes as Caleb Holt finished the 5,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 10.54 seconds and finishing in 141st place. Cooper Bostrom came in 148th with a time of 20:23.11.

Lucas Gates finished 188th and had a career-best time of 21:32.31. Xander Porter was 248th with a personal best mark of 23:57.44.

Gideon Follett had a career best effort as he clocked in at 24:51.54 and came in 261st. Max Bostrom finished 263rd and had his top career time of 25:43.17.

The Lady Dragons did not compete in Sequoyah Hills Saturday due to prior academic commitments.

Clinton will be back in action Saturday as it heads to Victor Ashe Park in Northwest Knoxville to compete in the Victor Ashe Park Invitational.
