Records fall for ACHS runners

Two Anderson County runners shattered school records Saturday at the Jesse Owens Invitational in Alabama.

Lady Mavericks runner Ava Moody completed the course in the biggest meet in the South in 18 minutes, 4.70 seconds. She broke her sister’s 5,000-meter record. Madison Moody held the previous school record for a 5K time (18:27).

On the boys’ side, Vance Laster finished 87th and completed the course in 16:22.34, shattering Kirby Logan’s previous school record of 16:31.

Madison Moody and Logan ran collegiately and both recently graduated from college.

“I was really proud of Vance and Ava for breaking those records,” ACHS Coach Derek Wallace said. “I was really proud of both our boys and girls today.

“This is the deepest boys team I’ve had since I’ve been here,” he said. “And I’m hoping our girls will continue to get healthy and be ready for the regionals.”

In Alabama, the Mavericks had both Laster and Cameron Hardy cross the finish line in under 17 minutes. Hardy completed the race in 16:53. 59 and came in 141st.

John Cutler was 160th (17:07.42). Ryan Basford finished 243rd (18.14.34). Darren Anderson was 252nd (18:26.70). Ethan Bolton came in 255th (18.28.60) and Toby Day finished 261st with a time of 18:47. 15.

In addition to Moody’s record time, the Lady Mavericks had Sydney Day post a time of 22:49.73. Emily Boring finished the course in 23:14.51, while Marley Caldwell clocked in with an effort of 23:37.52.

The trip to Alabama completed a busy week for both the Mavericks and Lady Mavericks, who also competed in the Cove Lake Invitational Thursday night.

Ben Clotfelter took third place in the boys’ race as he navigated the course in 17:32.02.

Franklin Downs was 23rd (18:42.13), Michael Mattson came in 53rd (20:15.88). Luis Aguilar crossed the finish line in 20:57.66. Zander Vo navigated the course in 22:21.85. Caleb Dill finished in 23:25.15. Tanner Warman clocked in at 25:08.24.

In the girls’ race, Emma Johnson posted a time of 30:59.02. Anna Gross clocked in at 32:07.91. Victoria Sharp crossed the line in 34:15.92.
