Dake breaks records

Anderson County High School’s boys basketball team entered the week perched atop the District 4-AAA standings. The Mavericks (12-7 overall, 4-0 in the district) have won their first league games handily.

They closed last week with a 72-35 victory over league newcomer Cumberland Gap on the road Friday night. The game, originally scheduled to be played at ACHS, was moved to Cumberland Gap as many games were postponed or shuffled on the schedule due to potential high winds that were forecasted for Friday as many area school districts opted to close their doors during the school day.

The Mavericks opened the week at home with a 98-70 league victory over Gibbs, another district newcomer, on Tuesday, Jan. 9.

ACHS had a balanced scoring attack against the Eagles and one Mavs player had a record setting performance. Junior guard/forward Brandon Dake shattered not one but two single-game school offensive records.

Dake had a game-high 43 points against Gibbs, breaking the program’s single-game points record, which was previously held by Connor Martin, who once scored 40 points for the Mavericks in a single game.

And for good measure, Dake also etched his name in the school’s record book one more time against the Eagles as he knocked down 11 three-point shots, besting the previous mark of 10 that was held most recently by Michael Mott.

Dake may now own the two school records, but he was quick to his credit his team for helping him maximize his scoring output against Gibbs.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without my teammates,” Dake said. “We’ve all been working hard. We’ve been working hard since the summer.

“This feels really good and it is very special, but there’s no way that I could’ve done any of this without my teammates. We’re playing really well together right now and we’ve come together in a big way.”

Dake was the biggest star of the night for the Mavericks against the Eagles. He, however, received plenty of help from his supporting cast as he was one of three ACHS players to post double figures

in the scoring

column.

Daylen Cole had 12 points and also dished out six assists. Hayden Craig added 11 points, and Cole Russell chipped in with 10 points.

The Mavericks’ game scheduled for Monday was canceled due to snow.
