Meet Eddie McCarter: Air Force 1955-58; Navy 1958-60

EDDIE MCCARTER
“I wanted to get in there and get an education” is the reason Eddie McCarter gave for serving a total of five years in the Air Force and the Navy.

McCarter was one of the military veterans honored at the monthly veterans breakfast held Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Clinton Community Center.

McCarter served first in the Air Force from 1955 to 1958.

Then he served in the Navy until 1960, when his father suffered a heart attack. As the oldest son, McCarter received a hardship discharge. In both branches of service, he received education in electronics.

McCarter was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base near Washington, D.C., and several other bases in the United Sates as well as Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines.

What he enjoyed most about being in the military was helping people in the civilian community wherever he was stationed, he said.

Because of that interest, he received the nickname ”The Little Ambassador.”

McCarter also enjoyed visiting the sick in the military community.
