Childers to swim at state

Dragons finish season strong

Clinton High School took a full relay team to the finals in the 400 free relay event. The Dragons swimmers were first alternate for the event (17th seed), but ended up placing 14th with a time of 4:17:89. Relay team members were (from left) Ryan Keller, Isaac Childers, Cooper Bostrom and Max Bostrom.
A Clinton High School senior swimmer is headed to the upcoming state championships.

Isaac Childers, a team captain for the Dragons, will swim at the Tennessee State Swim Championships Feb. 9-11, at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Childress posted a pair of top-10 finishes at the Knoxville Interscholastic Swim League City Championships on Sunday at the University of Tennessee’s Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatics Center.

He placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle, as he touched the wall in 22.54 seconds. He came in ninth, winning the “B” final of the 100-yard breaststroke. He came in ninth and finished the event in 1 minute, 6.57 seconds.

With his marks at the city championships, Childers continued Clinton’s highly successful season.

He was one of nine Clinton athletes to compete at the city meet, which was originally scheduled for Jan. 19-21. It was delayed by the recent snowstorm that caused the postponement and cancellation of several high school sporting events.

Other Clinton High swimmers who were in action on the city’s grand stage included Matthew Armendariz, Abigail Bennett, Marlin Hamblin, Luke Hatmaker, Ella Hill, Wesley Hill, Logan Johnson, Josiah Shelton and David Holt.

Clinton’s boys posted a pair of top-20 finishes in the relays. The Dragons’ 400-yard freestyle relay team came in 14th in the finals (4:17.89) and shaved 28 seconds off its previous best time.

The 200-yard medley relay team finished 18th in the finals, posting a time of 2:07.79.

Clinton Coach Jan Smith said she was pleased with last weekend’s results.

“We’re ecstatic and we’re happy with all that they’ve accomplished,” she said. “They’ve worked hard.

“They worked through winter break and they went through two weeks without school and without practice.”

Clinton missed two weeks of school and practice due to the inclement winter weather that forced the postponement of the KISL city championships.
