I-75 bridge work north of Rocky Top expected to cause traffic backups

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has is- sued a traffic alert in effect through May 25 for bridge work that will reduce Interstate 75 to one lane of traffic in each direction at Mile Marker 133, just south of the Caryville exit.
“Travelers … should be aware of upcoming bridge repair activities that will have a significant impact on traffic,” TDOT said.
The work, which began Monday (April 28), has reduced travel to one lane in each direction at Mile Marker 133, just south of the Caryville exit (134).
Photos of traffic backups began appearing on social media on Monday morning.
“These lane closures will be in place 24/7 and will allow crews to perform substructure and deck repairs to the bridges over Better Chanee Road and the R.J. Corman Railroad,” TDOT said in an official announcement.
“All bridge work is expected to be complete on or before Sunday, May 25,” it said.
The work schedule “is contingent on favorable weather conditions,” TDOT said, adding:
“Motorists are advised to expect delays and use extreme caution in this area as workers will be present.”
TDOT also recommends that drivers “use all motorist-information tools wisely” and to “Know Before You Go” by checking travel conditions before starting a trip.
“The TDOT SmartWay system provides the latest construction activity traffic updates,” the agency said.
“Travelers can also call 511 for travel information.”
