Brock’s walk-off sends Lady Mavs into tourney on high note

A walk-off RBI single by Reece Brock lifted the Anderson County High School softball team to a dramatic 3-2 victory over Union County on Senior Night, closing out its District 4-AAA regular-season schedule Monday.

With the win, the Lady Mavericks (21-10 overall, 7-3 District 4-AAA) clinched the No. 2 seed for the upcoming district tournament.

“I’m extremely excited for our girls and what this means for us going into the district tournament,” Anderson County Coach Lindsey Verner said.

“I’m extremely happy with the way our girls played. We just weren’t getting the timely hits. We hit the ball hard, but we hit it right at them.”

Freshman Cindle Justice started in the circle and pitched six strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and four walks, while striking out eight.

Addison Grooms entered in the seventh and threw a scoreless frame, striking out one to earn the win.

“Cindle was tremendous,” Verner said. “She did a great job for the first six innings, and then Addy came in during the seventh and shut the door.”

Senior Kaycee Baldwin sparked the offense, going 2-for-3 and scoring all three runs. She also stole three bases.

Alli McKamey added a 2-for-3 performance with a double and two runs.

The Lady Mavericks blanked Cumberland Gap 4-0 in a district matchup on Tuesday, April 22.

Grooms tossed a two-hit shutout against the Lady Panthers, striking out seven.

Bella Brummett tripled and drove in two runs, while Baldwin singled and scored.

Ashton Thurman collected two hits, including a double, and added a run scored and an RBI.
