Tennessee Sassenachs Herbal Apothecary has opened along Andersonville Highway in Norris, featuring tinctures, salves, lotions and other herbal remedies and folk medicines.

Owners are Amy Vanderpool and her daughter, Molly Vanderpool Rogers, who make most of the products in-house at their business.

It’s based in the former Shear Magic beauty salon building at 2707 Andersonville Highway, near the Museum of Appalachia.

“We opened our store April 16, but we have operated a website selling our products for the past four years,” Vanderpool said. “The COVID pandemic was the catalyst for us starting our business.”

As for what the business sells, “These are remedies that people have used for centuries,” she said. “The reality is that you don’t need a pharmaceutical [product] for every ailment.

“We make all of it here, except for the essential oils,” she said. “We’re a distributor for Plant Therapy for those.”

She describes her products as “Christian herbalism.”

The store also makes herbal tea drinks for on-premises consumption.

“Everything we sell has been tested and has worked for somebody,” Vanderpool said.

She said business has already been picking up in her Norris location.

“This is a great place to be to have this kind of business,” she said, with the store being about two miles off Interstate 75, Exit 122, with easy access to Clinton.

Store operating hours and days now are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays.

“We probably will start opening on Tuesdays, too,” Vanderpool said.

“But people can still order anytime on our website (tnsassenachs.com),” she added.

The store may be reached by phone at 865-863-9236.
