Letters to the Editor

Editor,

A couple of weeks ago I listened, riveted, to WYSH’s “Ask Your Neighbor” program, as Commissioner Anthony Allen told how a kindly librarian changed his young life, by taking him under her wing. She filled a boy’s arms with books, and filled his mind with dreams of one day becoming an engineer. His present-day love of libraries was as plain as it was contagious.

I’ve been to the Clinton Library, and it simply does not have the sorts of materials that led a much-younger me down a similar path. Its sparse technically-oriented offerings could use some thoughtful attention, to match the needs of a community with a national lab.

I understand that Commissioner Allen is being considered by the County Commission for a position on the county Library Board.

I cannot imagine any better voice, nor anyone better-qualified, than Commissioner Allen to serve on that board. With a master’s degree in computer engineering, he has the passion, the knowledge, and the humanity to make Anderson County’s library system a fantastic resource for our future scientists, inventors, and engineers.

Volunteers of this caliber don’t come around often. He has my vote. And he should have yours.

Respectfully,

James Arthur
