Wildcats edge rivals on links in four-way match
In one of its closest matches of the season, the Oak Ridge High School boys golf team claimed a narrow victory Thursday in a four-way meet at Oak Ridge Country Club.
The Wildcats shot a team score of 161 to edge Anderson County (162), Clinton (164) and Campbell County (168).
“We have some good golf here in our area. All you have to do is see how close this thing was,” Oak Ridge Coach Scott Hinton said.
“The big thing about this was that it was a chance to see how we stacked up against a team in our district, Campbell County. Of course, Clinton and Anderson County aren’t in our district anymore, but they’re really good teams.”
Oak Ridge’s Kaleb Jackson was low medalist with a 38. Hunter Hinton and Billy Bennett each carded 39s, while Braxton Pemberton rounded out the scoring with a 45. Abel Hensley also shot 45, though his round did not figure into the team score.
“Kaleb was able to do what we needed him to do,” Coach Hinton said. “We’re trending upward and we’re exactly halfway through our season schedule. We’ve played in seven matches and we have seven more to go.”
Earlier in the week, Oak Ridge knocked off district favorite Knoxville Halls at Beaverbrook Country Club, which will host both the District and Region championships.
Hunter Hinton led the Wildcats with a 36.
“Hunter played really well, and the other big thing was to get our kids over there, especially the ones who hadn’t played that course,” Coach Hinton said.
On the girls’ side, Oak Ridge’s Kaedyn Hollander shot 50 at ORCC on Thursday, while Lily Langenberger carded a 53.
“I’m excited to see Kaedyn break 50, and the girls are excited,” Coach Hinton said.
