The Mavericks, playing without freshman starting quarterback JD Gillam, rolled to a 58-28 win over Carter on Friday night in Strawberry Plains.

Deameion Leavell stepped in at quarterback again and posted a stellar performance for the Mavericks (3-1 overall, 3-0 in the region).

Leavell, who previously played at Bearden and Clinton after relocating from Kentucky, emerged as a double threat for Anderson County as he completed 13-of-15 passing attempts and racked up 236 yards and threw five touchdown passes. On the ground, he rushed for 108 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries.

Zach Happney added two touchdown receptions, totaling 51 yards on two catches. His scores covered 19 and 32 yards. Leavell and Thompson also connected on scoring strikes from 63 and 13 yards.

Anderson County built a 30-14 halftime lead and never looked back. Thompson broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run after the break before Leavell closed the offensive scoring with a 35-yard dash to the end zone.

The Mavericks’ defense also contributed when Evan Pyatt returned an interception 30 yards for a touchdown.

Anderson County will be on the road for the third straight week Friday when it travels south on Interstate 75 to face Chattanooga Prep in a non-region contest. The Sentinels (2-3) are coming off an 18-6 victory over Marion County.
