The 2025 football season marks the end of an era for the Anderson County High School program.

For seven memorable seasons, Ella the Dog has been a fixture on the Mavericks’ sideline.

The loyal Labrador retrieved the kicking tee and PAT block after every score, becoming as much a part of Anderson County football as the players and coaches themselves.

When the Mavericks captured the 2022 Class 4A state championship in Chattanooga, Ella stole the show — sprinting across the field with her trademark enthusiasm.

This fall, Ella worked her final regular-season home game, fittingly witnessing a thrilling 31-30 victory over Alcoa that secured Anderson County’s ninth consecutive Region 2-4A title.

Ella’s owner, Lance Freeman, is a proud ACHS alumnus who played alongside Head Coach Davey Gillum and Assistant Coach Russ Gillum. Lance’s brother, Travis, now serves as the school’s principal.

“I wanted to make sure Ella went out on top,” Freeman said. “And she did.”

Now 10 years old, Ella will officially retire after this season. She’ll turn 11 in January, and though her heart remains in the game, Freeman said her body is telling her it’s time.

“She still has the drive, but she just doesn’t have the stamina,” he said. “She’s still eager, but she has some muscle atrophy that’s set in. It’s sad — I have to remind myself she’s not dying, she’s just retiring.”

Ella’s presence has brought joy to countless fans across the Volunteer State and a special connection to Freeman’s family. His daughter, Ansley, is a multi-sport athlete at ACHS, while his younger daughter, Josie, is a seventh-grader at Norris Middle School.

“I was hoping Ella could stay until Josie was in high school, but she just can’t,” Freeman said.

For now, Ella can rest easy — a beloved Maverick who fetched glory and hearts.
