Meeting set to explore SOCM chapter in Anderson County
The Anderson County Clinton City Retired Teachers Association and the Oak Ridge Retired Teachers Association will host an informational meeting about starting a local chapter of Statewide Organizing for Community Empowerment at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at the Clinton Community Center.
SOCM — pronounced “sock-em” — is a 53-year-old, member-driven grassroots organization founded in rural East Tennessee. The group works to help Tennesseans have a stronger voice in shaping their communities by training local leaders and supporting democratically run, locally rooted membership chapters across the state.
County-based SOCM chapters select issues they want to address, then work with neighbors and elected officials to pursue community-driven solutions.
Representatives from SOCM will attend the meeting to explain the organization’s model and discuss what forming an Anderson County chapter could look like. All Anderson County residents are invited to participate.
