Children enjoy Clinton Elementary School’s new playground

The new Clinton Elementary School inclusive playground is open.

Clinton City Schools announced the opening on Monday, Nov. 17.

“The CES inclusive playground is open for business!” the school stated in an official Facebook post, thanking Shawn Humphrey, the school system’s supervisor of facilities, for his tireless work in making the playground a reality. “The kids are loving it.”

The playground is in a former parking lot area. The school recently added a new parking lot beside the old Wiggles and Giggles location to replace that one.

The playground features swings, a pit for a game called gaga, and a soft surface on which the children can run safely.

The playground has slides and and structures on which children can climb, similar to the existing one still in use on the school’s other side. However, there are things to enjoy at ground level, too, including chimes and a xylophone with attached mallets.

Director of Schools Kelly Johnson has described the new playground as all-inclusive, meaning much of its equipment will be easier for students with disabilities to enjoy.

“We have several kids [who] are currently at Clinton Elementary School [who] are in wheelchairs,” Johnson said in an interview. “This will help us address that and give them a nice playground.”
