Downs’ clutch free throws lift Norris in thriller
Norris Middle School’s boys basketball team is off to a fast start and the Senators remained undefeated as they toppled Huntsville, 38-10, on Thursday at home.
They were also the recipients of some good fortune on Monday, Nov. 10 as they edged Cherokee, 37-36, to open the week.
In that game, Norris was trailing, 36-35 late in the contest, when Cherokee was called for a technical foul.
Following the infraction, Cooper Downs converted a pair of free throws and propelled the Senators into the win column.
“Cherokee got a technical foul at the end and Cooper Downs made two clutch free throws late,” Norris coach Trey Bingham said. “We were about to lose the game.”
The late foul shots were two of Downs’ 20 points in the contest. Hunter Wade added seven points for Norris, while Zain Jackson finished with six.
Thursday’s contest against Huntsville was anything but a close call for Norris (5-0) as the Senators nabbed a 38-10 win at home.
Downs and William Dorton shared high-scoring honors for the Senators as they came up with seven points apiece to pace a balanced scoring attack.
“Against Huntsville, we had some guys play and they haven’t had much of a chance to play,” Bingham said. “They played well.
“William Dorton, Cooper Wilson and Mason Douglas all played well.”
Wade, Wilson and Douglas all scored three points for Norris. Fisher Clark had five points for the Senators, who never trailed in the contest.
