Public asked to weigh in on new Claxton park

Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank and the county’s Conservation Board are seeking suggestions from the community on preferred enhancements and services for a new Claxton community park.

The survey can be found online at the county government’s webpage at andersoncountytn.gov/claxton-community-park-relocation-survey/.

That link will be open for responses until Jan. 31.

At the Oct. 6 meeting of the Conservation Board, members voted to endorse a plan to relocate the Claxton Community Park to the new Claxton Elementary School property.

While the relocation is still early in the planning stages, county officials are working on required shared-use agreements, as well as seeking input on park enhancements that might be preferred by the community.

Survey questions include gauging interest in facilities such as permanent restrooms, playground equipment, a walking track, event space, a picnic area and more.

The county has received $250,000 from the Tennessee Valley Authority specifically for investment in a new park for Claxton to replace one near the former Bull Rull power plant.

While the Conservation Board will weigh many factors, including site conditions, safety, cost and quality, public input is strongly desired, the Mayor’s Office said in a release.

In addition to the improvements, the Conservation Board is also looking for “preferred ways to honor the rich history of [the] Kids Palace Playground,” which was built by members of the Claxton community.

The playground was built about 20 years ago on land made available through an easement with TVA near the now retired Bull Run plant, and the new home to Type One Fusion.

The initial playground project involved significant community involvement, including local clubs and community leaders.
