The Lady Mavericks won’t return to the hardwood until Friday, Jan. 2, when they host Lenoir City.
Anderson County (6-6) capped the year by winning two of three games in the Hammer’s Christmas Classic Powered by 5Star Preps on its home floor. In the tournament finale at ACHS, the Lady Mavericks came up short in a 64-49 loss to Kingston on Monday, Dec. 22, falling just shy of a tournament title.
It was the second time this season Anderson County lost to the Lady Yellow Jackets. Kingston also won the teams’ season opener in November.
Macy Basford led the Lady Mavericks with 22 points in the tournament championship game.
On Saturday, Anderson County notched a 53-36 victory over Hardin Valley Academy behind a strong performance from Bethany Lowe, who scored a game-high 21 points. Basford added 17 against the Lady Hawks, one of the area’s youngest squads.
The Lady Mavericks opened the tournament with a 58-27 rout of Karns, a young team still seeking its first win of the season. Basford scored 17 points and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player by 5Star Preps.
The season has been a rollercoaster for the Lady Mavericks, but Coach Mitch Cupples said he’s pleased with his team’s progress and is looking ahead to District 4-AAA play.
“When we played Karns and Hardin Valley, we played really well, but when we played Kingston, they were the more-aggressive team,” Cupples said. “But we’ve really improved since the first of the year, and I’m really proud of the girls. I’m looking forward to starting district.”
